While the transcontinental trudged along towards the west.
To Vancouver, through the Rockies lay its route across the crest.
From the east Beaver River to the Illecillewaet,
Take the pass, take the pass, through the mountains.
Oh, the Selkirk mountains were so rugged few would venture there.
But one day in 1881, a group would take that dare.
Setting off was Major Rogers knowing not how they would fare.
Take the pass, take the pass, through the mountains.
An incentive of five grand was not what Rogers sought to find,
With his Secwepemc guides he pierced the rugged mountain spine.
In the place to bear his name, the railway started on their line.
Take the pass, take the pass, through the mountains.
So began construction of the country’s metal artery,
Trestle, track, wood and steel were valuable commodity.
In grave danger, without pay, the men grew further ornery.
Take the pass, take the pass, through the mountains.
When the crisis was resolved the workers finally got their pay,
And the line continued forth across the rocky mountain way.
But that meant shit to those who, in that ground, was where they lay.

Avalanche after avalanche came the flood along the path.
They swept away the dozens that would drown in icy bath.
And every winter since would feel their fury and their wrath.

In August 1885, the rail crossed o’er the top,
‘Till November, the terrain would be a steady, gentle drop.
And the final spike was struck to mark the project’s final stop.

A feat of engineering that the country’d never seen,
Continental link through mountain, prairie, and the forest green.
To make the rail connection that would chain from sea to sea.
